Consumer Protection Act

CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT

The Minister of Trade and Industry has recently announced that, in terms of items 2(3)(a) of Schedule 2 to the Consumer Protection Act, it has deferred the general effective date of the Consumer Protection Act until 31 March 2011, on the grounds that “additional time is required for adequate preparation of the administrative systems necessary to ensure the efficient and effective implementation.”

The Consumer Protection Act, which was due to come into effect on 24 October 2009, will therefore only come into effect six months later.

The Department of Trade and Industry has yet to publish the draft Regulations to the Consumer Protection Act, for public comment.
